Hammock Ordering Kit

I did a price comparison between two of my favorite fabric suppliers on 12 February 2003, as I need to buy the parts for another hammock.   This is intended only to give you an idea of what you might need to buy to build a Speer Hammock according to the directions in Ed Speer's book.  For details on the insulator, see my cold weather reports.

Outdoor Wilderness Fabrics: hammock kit

ripstop nylon 1.9 oz 3 1/3 yards
RIPB white or red 4.23/yd total: $14.10  (color selection pretty limited)
This is the hammock itself

Polypro 1" strap 10 yards  breaking strength:
WP1H black .34/yd total: $3.40
This is for the straps for the hammock

Velcro 3/4" 12 yards (6 yards for insulator)
H&L3/4 .80/yd Total: $9.60
This is for both bug net and for insulator

noseem net 2.5 yards cut on angle
NOSEEUM Black 2.80/yd Total: $7.00
Bug net, of course

silnylon 9 2/3 (tarp and insulator)
RIPC seconds brown or gray 5.85/yd total: $56.55
This is for a tarp 10 x 10 feet and a 9 foot long insulator.

Grand total: $90.55

If you do not desire an insulator, delete 6 yards of velcro and 3 yards of silnylon for a savings of 26.85 and a total cost of $68.30

To this you will need to add some thread (all polyester) and some thick ribbon/thin webbing for pull outs for the tarp.   Thread can be picked up (tan or black) at WalMart for $0.50 for 500 yards.    I found the ribbon at Michaels craft store

If you do not need the tarp, the total cost comes to $26.60 for the hammock and bug net.
