One of the lessons from reading all the AT journals is the need to have some easy ways to get food together.  It turns out that many people get used to one set of food and stick to it with very little variation.  That works OK as long as a multivitamin tablet is taken each day.  When hiking, a minimum of 3000 cal per day are required.  Up to 6000 cal may be needed according to some sources.  

 

Here is one possible 3000 calorie menu that appeals to me.  I have tested the below and it tastes good.

 

4 Day resupply Shopping List:

 

2 pound package of dry roasted peanuts.  1 pound bag of M&Ms

Package of  instant rice that will give 2 cups.  

Package of instant mashed potatoes (Potato Buds taste good) to give 2 cups

2 cups of instant oatmeal  (or 8 packs of oatmeal)

1 cup of Peanut Butter

1 Cup of Honey

Small package of instant milk

8 soft taco shells (get the ones that do not need to be refrigerated)

Instant coffee,  Instant chicken bullion. If you have run out.

small bottle of oil, 2 oz needed.

small amount of sugar  (4 teaspoons needed)  

small amount of cinnamon (1/2 tsp needed).

4 oz of jerky

Zip lock baggies.  (need about 16)

8 oz bottle of HEET

Multivitamins if you have run out.

 

(Some of the above works out best if two share the purchase.)

 

This is what you do to pack it up:

 

4 breakfasts:

4 baggies of oatmeal:  1/2 cup of oatmeal per bag.

  add 1 heaping teaspoon of cinnamon sugar per bag 

  add a dash of salt per bag

  add a heaping teaspoon of instant milk per bag

OR

  2 small packets of oatmeal per bag

[200 cal per bag]  Add 1 cup hot water to cook

Coffee to wake up and warm up.

 

4 lunches:

Mix 1 C honey into 1 C peanut butter.  Add 1/2 cup dry milk.  This can be kept in a plastic peanut butter jar.  

Spread 1/4 cup per large taco shell .  2 per day to be eaten.

[800 cal for the serving]

 

4 suppers: 2 entrees to choose from:

2 baggies of potatoes:  1 cup of potato buds per bag.

  add dash of salt 

  add 2 heaping teaspoons of dry milk

  add some bits of jerky

  after cooking, add 1 T of oil

[400 cal per bag]  Add 1 cup of hot water to cook

OR

2 baggies of rice:  1 cup of rice per bag

  add heaping teaspoon of bullion

  after cooking, add 1 T oil

[450 cal per bag]  Add 1 cup of hot water to cook

 

Snacks: (1/2 the calories)

2 cups (10 handfuls) of MM&P per day as snacks.

1500 cal per day

 

In addition to the food, you will need about 2 oz of alcohol per day for cooking.
